There was 669 618 tons of cargo handled in SILPORT in 2006 – the first year of active port operation.
669 618 tons of cargo was handled in SILPORT (Port of Sillamäe, Estonia) in 2006, from which 122 749 tons in December. 39% of the overall cargo flow constituted oil products, 13% - liquid chemicals and 20% - general cargo (timber, scrap, and metal constructions). Other cargo groups transhipped through SILPORT terminals were gravel, shale oil and ro-ro cargo.
All the cargo was handled by 5 independent terminals that started active cargo handling in the middle of 2006:
• Sillamäe Oil Terminal – oil products;
• TankChem – liquid chemicals;
• Silsteve – general and ro-ro cargo;
• Silsteve Oil – shale oil;
• Passenger terminal – passengers .
There are 2 more terminals being built in SILPORT:
• Baltic Chemical Terminal – ammonia and liquid fertilisers;
• Sillgas – LPG.
SILPORT is the closest to Russia and the CIS-countries deep-sea port in the EU being located in Estonia only 25 km from the EU-Russia border. The first phase of the port’s infrastructure consists of 6 deep-sea berths (-12m to -16m deep) that allow accepting the largest vessels that can enter the Baltic Sea. SILPORT hinterland infrastructure consists of Sillamäe railway station and network of rail tracks and roads that provide an efficient connection to/ from the neighbouring markets of Russia and the CIS. The Port is easily navigable all year round. Sillamäe Free Zone (0% taxes and customs duties for cargo in transit) in combination with the fiscal policy of Estonia, the most liberal in Europe (0% corporate income tax on retained earnings), make SILPORT an efficient platform for value-added distribution of cargo to the neighbouring markets of Russia, the CIS and the EU states.
